Chinese authorities have recently carried out large-scale coordinated raids in several cities, detaining at least 30 Christians linked to Beijing’s Zion Church, including its founder, Pastor Jin Mingri. Observers say the move underscores an intensifying crackdown on independent religious groups in China.

According to multiple human rights and religious freedom organizations, since mid-October police have arrested Zion Church members in cities including Beijing, Chengdu, and Changsha, raiding worship venues and believers’ homes. Families of some detainees report they have yet to receive official notice or be allowed to meet with lawyers.

Rights advocates have denounced the operations as a “serious violation of citizens’ religious freedom.” The Zion Church has long operated independently, refusing to join the government-approved religious system—a stance analysts say has made it a key target of repression.

In recent years, the Chinese government has tightened its control over religious life, shutting down underground churches, restricting youth participation in religious education, and requiring all faith groups to “uphold the Party’s leadership.” Observers warn that the crackdown on the Zion Church may signal broader action against other unregistered congregations.
