Several Hong Kong media outlets reported on June 6 that the National Security Department of the Hong Kong Police arrested former Demosisto secretary-general Joshua Wong at Stanley Prison, where he is serving his sentence, accusing him of violating the Hong Kong National Security Law by conspiring to collude with foreign or external forces to endanger national security.
Wong was earlier sentenced to 56 months in prison over the “47 democrats primary election case” and is currently serving his term in Stanley Prison, with his earliest release expected in January 2027. While in custody, he was suddenly rearrested by the National Security Police and brought to the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts that same afternoon.
According to court reports, the charge alleges that between July and November 2020, Wong, together with exiled former Demosisto chairman Nathan Law and others, requested foreign or external forces to impose sanctions on China and Hong Kong, thereby violating provisions of the National Security Law. As police requested further investigation, the magistrate adjourned the case to August 8 for mention.
On the day of the hearing, Wong appeared in court wearing a black T-shirt and seemed in good spirits. The session lasted less than three minutes. Before being escorted out, he waved to the public gallery.
This additional charge is widely seen as the latest example of authorities pursuing pro-democracy figures under the National Security Law. Under the law, the offense of “collusion with foreign or external forces to endanger national security” carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The case has already drawn public attention and is expected to spark reactions from the international community.
